Echo (ECTE) Expert Interview – Dr. Robert Langer

On May 19, 2010 we interviewed world renowned medical and chemical engineer, Dr. Robert Langer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who also serves as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for Echo Therapeutics. Dr. Langer is the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT and he has written over a thousand articles with approximately 750 issued and pending patents worldwide. Dr. Langer is the most cited engineer in history and his patents have been licensed to over 220 pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device companies.

Dr. Langer has received over 180 major awards including the U.S. National Medal of Science; the Charles Stark Draper Prize, considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for engineers and the Millennium Prize, the world’s largest technology prize. He is the also the only engineer to have received the Gairdner Foundation International Award (72 recipients have gone one to win the Nobel Prize). The Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the largest prize in the U.S. for medical research, induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and he received the Lemelson-MIT prize, the world’s largest prize for invention for being “one of history’s most prolific inventors in medicine.” Dr. Langer was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and to the National Academy of Sciences. He is one of very few people ever elected to all three U.S. National Academies and the youngest in history to ever receive this distinction.

NovaBay (NBY) Expert Interview – Dr. David Stickler

On March 25, 2010 we interviewed Dr. David Stickler, a key opinion leader on Biofilms and Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) with a focus on catheter encrustation and blockage in permanently catheterized patients. Dr. Stickler is a senior research fellow affiliated with the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University where he is working on strategies to control crystalline bacterial biofilms with special attention to the bacteria Proteus mirabilis which his research indicates is a prime cause of biofilm and catheter encrustation and blockage.
In this interview, he discusses the patient population, causes of biofilm and CAUTI, the lack of satisfactory prevention and treatment for catheter encrustation and blockage as well as his opinions on NovaBay Pharmaceuticals Aganocide® program for CAUTI currently in human clinical trials.
